The exhaust valve gasket modification is done to prevent the gasket material from burning out.  It protrudes into the the hole and the hot exhaust gases burn the hole out of the gasket.  Which then burns the part of the gasket out that leads into the internal gilloteen shaft ,then bypasses the pressure into the center, not making pressure to force the diaphram open , which pulls the valve open.

The hole in the head is .195
The hole in the stock gasket is .120
The hole in the valve housing is .225
The .22 caliber  bullet is .210 inside diameter.

A 3/16 gasket punch (.1875 hole)will work or for the budget orientated mechanic a spent .22 caliper shell casing will work also. Be sure and offset the punch as it is very easy to damage the small amount of material that seperates the hole from the valve shaft.

This will allow for the gasket to not hinder the flow of the gasses that open and close the valve.  By doing this the valve will operated more efficiently and the gaskets will last longer, especially with any additional  engine modifications.
